CHICAGO (ICIS)--Egyptian fertilizer producer Alexandria Fertilizers (AlexFert) expects to start commercial production at its granular ammonium sulphate (AS) unit in early June, around six weeks later than had been planned, a company official told ICIS late on Tuesday.

The plant was expected to start commercial production in mid-April, but has been delayed due to technical issues.

The unit has a capacity to produce 500 tonnes/day of granular AS.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) conference, the official said the company plans to export the majority of the plant's granular AS production to Europe.

Domestic demand for granular AS is low in Egypt, because crystallised AS, which is a lower grade and less expensive, is more popular.

Granular AS is usually priced at a $50-100/tonne (€39-78/tonne) premium to caprolactam (capro) grade AS, depending on the market.

Quantum Fertilizers has signed an offtake agreement with AlexFert to sell AS produced at the plant in European markets.

The IFA conference is being held in Chicago, from 19-22 May.
