TORONTO (ICIS)--Allana Potash has received approval of environmental, social and health impact assessment for its planned potash project in Ethiopia, the Canada-based firm said on Wednesday.

Allana said that the approval - by Ethiopia’s ministry of mines and energy and the country’s environmental authority - was subject to fulfilment of several conditions outlined in the assessment, most of which "are already in place."

Conditions included monitoring ground water in the region, resettlement of two small villages, and a commitment to community development, it said.

Allana said that the approval marked an important step in obtaining a mining license for the Danakil potash project.

"Allana is optimistic that the granting of the mining license will occur in the next few months," it said.

The Danakil project is backed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and as such meets IFC performance standards, the company added.
