HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in April jumped 45% compared to the same month a year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Thursday.
The US shipped 400,827 tonnes of caustic soda in April, compared with 276,392 tonnes in April 2012. However, April’s figure was down 4% from the 416,763 tonnes shipped in March.
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda in April at 149,257 tonnes. It was followed by Canada (80,954 tonnes), Mexico (36,752 tonnes) and Suriname (34,871 tonnes).
Meanwhile, the US imported 91,797 tonnes of caustic soda in April, down 23% from the 118,622 tonnes received in the same month in 2012. Year to date, caustic soda imports are down 19% from the same period in 2012.
Canada was the top supplier of caustic soda to the US in April at 32,162 tonnes. It was followed by Taiwan (26,281 tonnes), China (13,957 tonnes) and Belgium (10,495 tonnes).
Major producers of US caustic soda include Dow, Formosa, Axiall, Olin, Occidental Chemicals and Shintech.
