HOUSTON (ICIS)--A recently patented silica masterbatch technology has been demonstrated for use in full-scale production facilities, two elastomer producers announced on Friday.

Tyres produced with this silica masterbatch technology offer a range of benefits comparable to tyres made with conventional dry silica mixing technology, said US-based Cooper Tire and Mexico-based Industrias Negromex in a press release.

The two companies joined together to develop and patent the silica masterbatch process.

The silica masterbatch was produced at a plant in Altamira, Mexico, operated by Industrias Negromex, which is a subsidiary of Grupo KUO, the companies said. Cooper Tire completed multiple tyre evaluations for the product, including all aspects of traction and handling performance, tread wear, all-season capability and rolling resistance.

Silica use in tyre production has grown in recent years because it helps with automobile fuel economy by reducing tyre rolling resistance, as well as with extending tread life.
