LONDON (ICIS)--Commercial grade bio-butanediol (BDO), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and gamma-butyrolactone equivalent to the petrochemical material can be made from bio-succininc acid, renewables firm Myriant and process technology company Johnson Matthey - Davy Technologies (JM Davy) said on Wednesday.
The companies said that they had produced BDO and THF from Myriant’s bio-succinic acid on Teesside in the UK using JM Davy’s commercially-available BDO/THF process.
The overall carbon efficiency of the process using the bio-based feedstock is better than that achieved in the direct fermentation route to bio-BDO, Myriant said.
JM Davy said the process was competitive in terms of cost and quality compared with its use with petroleum feedstocks.
“Achieving this success is another major step towards advancing Myriant’s commercialisation strategy for bio-succinic acid and its derivatives, and, it is significant because it provides us immediate entrance into a large market with JM Davy, the global leader in BDO/THF process technology,” Myriant’s chief operating office, Cenan Ozmeral, said.
