HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production in May was at 87% of capacity in May, unchanged from the month before, according to data released on Wednesday by The Chlorine Institute.

US chlor-alkali production was 1,000,518 tons (912,00 tonnes) of chlorine and 1,030,722 tons of caustic soda, the trade group said.

The May figure indicates that production has been fairly steady, but without the strong uptick predicted with increasing signs of a rebounding US home construction sector. Chlorine is used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), used extensively in homebuilding.

Major US chlor-alkali producers include Axiall, Dow Chemical, Formosa Plastics, Shintech, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and Westlake.
