Canada Q1 chemicals plant utilisation rises to 81.7%

TORONTO (ICIS)--Capacity utilisation at Canadian chemical plants rose to 81.7% in the first quarter of 2013, a statistics agency said on Thursday.

This compares with chemical plant capacity utilisation of 79.5% in the 2012 fourth quarter and 79.2% in the 2012 first quarter, Statistics Canada said in a data release.

Plant utilisation in Canada’s plastics and rubber products sector was 76.6% in the first quarter - up from 75.6% in the 2012 fourth quarter but down from 79.8% in the 2012 first quarter.

Canada’s overall manufacturing plant utilisation was 79.7% - up 0.2 percentage points from 79.5% in the 2012 fourth quarter but down 1.9 percentage points year on year from 81.6% in the 2012 first quarter.

Canada’s total industrial plant utilisation was 81.1% in the first quarter – compared with 80.5% in the 2012 fourth quarter and 80.7% in the 2012 first quarter.
