HOUSTON (ICIS)--Canada’s National Energy Board (NEB) on Thursday said that Kinder Morgan’s TransMountain Pipeline has released an unspecified amount of crude oil near Merritt, British Columbia.

“The size of the spill has yet to be determined by the NEB,” the Canadian energy regulator said. “There is no immediate safety concern for local residents, and precautions are being taken to ensure continued public safety.”

The incident was reported Wednesday afternoon, and the pipeline has been shut down to prevent the release of additional oil.

Kinder Morgan is informing area residents about the incident, and the NEB’s emergency response team has been deployed to monitor and assess the company’s response, investigation and clean-up.

A Kinder Morgan spokesman was not immediately available for a request for comment.
