SINGAPORE (ICIS)--US producer Williams late on Thursday confirmed that one person has died in an explosion and fire at its ethane cracker in Geismar, Louisiana.

The company is now “closely monitoring the status of one employee and seven contractors who remain hospitalised and are being treated for injuries,” it said in a statement.

Williams spokesperson Tom Droege earlier said that the explosion occurred at about  08:37 local time (13:37 GMT) on 13 June.

The company added that the fire has been extinguished and the company is cooperating with federal, state and local agencies in assessing the situation and determining the cause of the explosion.

“The extent of damage is unknown at this time,” it added.

The Geismar facility annually produces about 1.3bn lb of ethylene and 90m lb of polymer-grade propylene (PGP), according to the company’s website.
