Japan's PS production decreases 1% in May

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s output of polystyrene (PS) fell by 1% year on year to 51,838 tonnes in May, official industry statistics showed on Wednesday.

Domestic demand for PS also decreased by 2% to 48,981 tonnes, while exports increased by 18% to 1,858 tonnes from the previous year, according to the Japan Styrene Industry Association (JSIA).

Meanwhile, production of styrene monomer (SM) rose by 14% year on year to 215,535 tonnes in May, while domestic demand declined by 2% to 113,839 tonnes, the data showed.

Exports of SM were up by 35% to 103,420 tonnes from a year earlier, based on the statistics.
