S Korea's polyolefins export volumes surges in May

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s exports of polyolefins surged in May as overall shipments continued to grow steadily for the third straight month amid strong demand from its two largest markets, the US and China, data from a trade promotion agency showed on Friday.

The country’s exports of polypropylene (PP) rose by 37.6% year on year in May to 100,193 tonnes, while shipments of polyethylene (PE) was up by 37.9% at 124,135 tonnes, according to the Korea International Trade Association (KITA). (please see table below)

Overseas shipments of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) rose by 15.6% year on year to 34,515 tonnes, while exports of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) was up by 89.4% and 37.9%, respectively, at 36,142 tonnes and 124,135 tonnes, KITA data showed.

Exports of ethylene was up by 29% year on year at 104,205 tonnes while shipments of propylene fell by 21.1% year to 83,916 tonnes, according to KITA.

For the first 20 days of May, overall exports of petrochemicals was up by 4.1% year on year at $4.01bn (€3.05bn), while shipments of petroleum products was down by 5.1% at $4.2bn, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MTIE).

The country posted its largest trade surplus since October 2010 in May this year, with exports up by 3.2% year on year at $48.4bn and imports down by 4.8% at $42.3bn, according to the MTIE.

This resulted in a trade surplus of $6.03bn, compared with a surplus of $2.45bn in April this year and a gain of $2.39bn in May 2012, it said.
