SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s imports of petrochemicals mostly showed a year-on-year increase, with many of them indicating double growth, industry sources said on Tuesday.

Imports volume of ethylene and propylene achieved 145,154 tonnes and 200,853 tonnes in May, increased by 37% and 41% year on year respectively, while butadiene (BD) import increased by 70% year on year to 27,684 tonnes in the month, according to the data.

Ethylene and propylene imports in China are expected to continue increasing every year because the domestic demand exceeds the country’s output by a large margin, said an industry analyst.

Domestic actual demand of ethylene increased by 8% year on year in May, and it will continue to increase in the remaining months of this year, the source added.

BD import volume increased in May because market players kept an optimistic outlook for the BD market at the beginning of the month, in line with the increasing prices, and some traders imported larger volumes to generate profit, said a separate industry source.
