US Occidental releases 250 lb of EDC from Texas plant

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US producer Oxy Vinyls released ethylene dichloride (EDC) from its vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plant in Deer Park, Texas, according to a regulatory filing made available on Wednesday.

According to the filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), a reactor leaked approximately 250 lb (110 kg) of EDC into the plant’s cooling water system.

The reactor was taken out of service and isolated from the cooling tower system, according to the filing. No cause of the incident was provided.

Oxy Vinyls is part of Occidental Petroleum.
