HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali producer Axiall has declared a force majeure on all grades of liquid caustic soda shipped from its facilities in North America, according to a letter obtained by ICIS on Friday.
“This force majeure event is due to unexpected operational and power supply issues at our Natrium (West Virginia) site which are beyond Axiall’s reasonable control,” the 27 June letter said.
“We are taking steps on an expedited basis to remedy the situation, but at this point, we have not yet determined the length of this delay and force majeure declaration,” the letter said.
Contract prices for liquid caustic soda are assessed by ICIS at $515-585/dst (dry short ton).
Other major US producers of caustic soda include Dow, Occidental Chemical and Shintech.
