HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in May fell 4% from the same month in 2012, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Monday.
The US shipped 345,073 tonnes of caustic soda in May, compared with 360,433 tonnes in May 2012, the ITC said.
May’s figure was also 14% lower than the 400,827 tonnes shipped in April. Year-to-date, however, US caustic soda shipments are 10% higher than the 1,714,453 tonnes shipped in the same period of 2012.
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda in May at 128,710 tonnes.
It was followed by Canada (60,184 tonnes), Chile (40,434 tonnes) and Mexico (24,655 tonnes).
Meanwhile, the US imported 114,452 tonnes of caustic soda in May, up 40% from the 81,924 tonnes received in the same month in 2012.
China was the top supplier of caustic soda to the US in May at 38,771 tonnes. It was followed by Canada (27,963 tonnes), Japan (26,280 tonnes) and Mexico (9,495 tonnes).
Major producers of US caustic soda include Dow, Formosa, Axiall, Olin, Occidental Chemicals and Shintech.
