HOUSTON (ICIS)--US vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) exports in May dropped by 20% on reduced shipments to Brazil, Mexico and Canada and also to countries not ranked among the top destinations, according to data released on Monday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
US VAM exports totalled 35,821 tonnes in May, compared with 45,037 tonnes in the same month of 2012.
Exports to Brazil, Mexico and Canada - the second, third and fourth largest destinations - totaled 13,104 tonnes, down 38% from 21,028 tonnes in May last year.
April shipments to Belgium - the largest destination - totalled 14,215 tonnes, up 44% from 9,896 tonnes in the same month of 2012.
Shipments to destinations not ranked among the 10 largest accounted for about 73% of the drop, with only 1,400 tonnes shipped to those countries in May, compared with 8,116 tonnes in May 2012.
Major US VAM producers include Celanese, Dow Chemical, DuPont and LyondellBasell.
