HOUSTON (ICIS)--US acrylic acid exports soared almost 56% in May from the same month a year ago, while imports plunged 65%, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday.
Exports increased to 2,334 tonnes from 1,499 tonnes in May 2012, largely because of lagging US domestic demand. Mexico and Brazil accounted for nearly all of the increased exports in May.
Imports, which outpaced US export volumes by 15% in the first five months this year, fell to only 1,251 tonnes in May from 3,556 tonnes in the same month of 2012. Imports have declined so far this year because of ample supply and a weather delay in the spring coatings season.
US acrylic acid suppliers include Dow Chemical, BASF, Sasol and Arkema Emulsion Systems.
