SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) commenced construction of a naphtha cracker and crude distillation unit (CDU) at Huizhou in Guangdong province on 9 July, the company said on Wednesday.
The cracker can produce 1m tonne/year of ethylene and the CDU can process 200,000 bbl/day of crude, CNOOC said in a newsletter on its website.
The project is called Huizhou Project II, which will turn the site into an integrated refinery and petrochemical complex, from a 240,000 bbl/day refinery currently.
The new CDU may start operation in 2015, and the cracker in the following year, a company source said.
CNOOC has secured final governmental approval on the project in May.
