HOUSTON (ICIS)--AkzoNobel’s pulp and performance chemicals business plans to increase capacity at several of its colloidal silica plants in Asia and Europe, the Amsterdam-headquartered paints and coatings company said on Wednesday.

Expansion at the production sites in Taiwan, China and Germany should be completed in the second half of 2014, AkzoNobel said.

Capacity and investments costs were not disclosed.

Colloidal silica is used in electronics, paper, construction and coatings.

AkzoNobel said it has identified “major growth potential” for its colloidal products, and the planned investments are in line with its global focus in pulp bleaching, paper chemicals, colloidal silica and expandable microspheres.
