HOUSTON (ICIS)--Programmed maintenance at Mexico’s Cangrejera cracker will tighten polyethylene (PE) supplies in September and October, company sources said on Wednesday.

The 1,400 tonnes/day Cangrejera cracker is scheduled to stop operations on 12 August for programmed maintenance that will last until 2 October, the source said.

The ethylene shortage will force rotating shutdowns of the PE plants and other units that use ethylene as a feedstock, such as the ethylene oxide (EO) facility.

PE supply will be more affected during September and October, although many of the closures are still to be determined, the source said.

Inventory levels and market conditions will be important factors in the upcoming closures.

Another cracker in Morelos (1,700 tonnes/day) will continue to operate normally during the Cangrejera shutdown.
