EU ABS year-on-year imports drop, exports rise in May

LONDON (ICIS)--Imports of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) into the EU have fallen by 1.4% in May year on year, but exports rose by 5.8%, data from statistics agency Eurostat showed on Thursday.

For April, imports into the EU rose by 18%, while exports dropped by 19% year on year.

Asian producers, in particular from South Korea, have been present in the European ABS market throughout 2013.

However, factors such as exchange rates and the varied nature of European feedstock costs, such as that for styrene and butadiene (BD), mean there has been little consistency in the arbitrage between the two regions.

European ABS demand has been relatively stable for most of 2013, with declining demand from the automotive and construction sectors being offset by stronger demand from the household and white goods markets.
