SINGAPORE (ICIS)--PTT Global Chemical will shut down its I-4 No 1 cracker in Map Ta Phut for a 44-day turnaround from 1 August, the Thai producer said late on Thursday.

The cracker has a 515,000 tonne/year capacity.

The cracker’s scheduled turnaround will help ease the expected build-up of ethylene inventory following the unexpected shutdown of the company’s 300,000 tonne/year low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant on 10 July, PTTGC said in a statement.

The LDPE plant is expected to be shut for three and a half months to carry out repairs at the cylinder of the unit’s booster/primary compressor, the company said.

“From the LDPE plant shutdown, it will cause the company to have excess ethylene which will need to be managed within the group, including external sales,” PTTGC said.

The company said it will use LDPE resins from existing inventory and, if needed, will partially import material to supply to its customers.

But with the cracker that feeds into the LDPE plant due for shutdown, PTTGC said: “The excess ethylene volume shall be reduced.”

PTTGC calculated that the impact of the LDPE plant’s shutdown to overall net profit this year should not exceed 2%.
