HOUSTON (ICIS)--OMNOVA will redirect its excess styrene butadiene (SB) latex capacity at its ?xml:namespace>
The move is aimed at optimising OMNOVA’s assets and providing greater flexibility to respond the company’s changing business mix, as well as improve SB industry capacity utilisation, the company said in a news release.
Approximately 120m lb/year (54,400 tonnes/year) of SB capacity will be taken out of the market and repurposed for styrene acrylics production, said Jim Hohman, president of the company’s Performance Chemicals division.
OMNOVA expects to save approximately $4m/year (€3m/year) in lower operating costs.

The transition should take 20 months, the company said.
Once the project is completed, the Mogadore plant will have the most diverse range of capabilities in OMNOVA’s Performance Chemicals division, the company said, with capabilities in SB, styrene butadiene acrylonitrile, bio-polymers, hollow plastic pigments, acrylics, styrene acrylics, in-mold coatings and fluorosurfactants..
"Styrene butadiene latex will continue to be an important part of our portfolio, but will be complemented by newer assets in Mogadore to meet the increasing demand for OMNOVA's styrene acrylic products and other chemistries," Hohman said.
