Japan's Daicel Q1 net profit jumps 69%, net sales up 7.8%

TOKYO (ICIS)--Daicel reported a 69% year-on-year increase in its first-quarter net profit to yen (Y) 6.41bn ($66m), partly on the depreciation of the yen, the Japanese chemical firm said on Thursday.

Net sales in April-June 2013 grew 7.8% year on year to Y94.9bn, while operating profit rose 19% to Y7.78bn, Daicel said in a statement.

In the cellulose segment, net sales increased by 13% year on year to Y21bn, while operating profit rose by 26% to Y4.29bn, partly on increased net sales of cellulose acetate for cigarette filters due to higher demand, the company said.

In the organic chemicals segment, net sales increased 2.4% to Y18.9bn, with operating profit up 29% to Y1.69bn, it said.
