LONDON (ICIS)--Orascom E&C USA has awarded RW Constructors a subcontract to execute mechanical, electrical and instrumentation (MEI) erection works at Iowa Fertilizer Company's $1.8bn (€1.35bn) greenfield nitrogen-based facility, Dutch parent company Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) said on Thursday.
"RW Constructors is a 50/50 special purpose company formed between Rust Constructors Inc, a URS Corp subsidiary, and The Weitz Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of OCI N.V, to execute the MEI erection works for the ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate (AN), nitric acid, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) Inside Battery Limit plants at Iowa Fertilizer," the Amsterdam-based firm said.
The MEI erection works are scheduled to begin in the current quarter, with the plant expected commence production in mid-2015.
The facility plant will produce up to 2m tonnes/year of nitrogen fertilizers, including ammonia, urea, and UAN, as well as diesel exhaust fluid.
Robert Zaist, president of Energy & Construction for URS Corporation, said: "URS and OCI have an outstanding record of cooperation and project delivery, and we are pleased to bring the combined experience and resources of our two companies together to deliver Iowa Fertilizer and other major industrial projects to clients in the North American market."
Osama Bishai, OCI Construction Group chief operating officer, said: "This is the last major construction subcontract to be awarded at Iowa Fertilizer, and we are on track to complete construction works in the summer of 2015."
