HOUSTON (ICIS)--Ashland on Wednesday officially opened a new $60m (€45m) gelcoats plant at Changzhou in China’s Jiangsu province, the US-based specialty chemicals firm said.
The new facility, which currently employs 30 people, will also produce adhesives, fire retardant resins and additives for industrial products. Initial plant capacities are for 10,000 tonnes/year of gelcoats and 2,000 tonnes/year of adhesives products.
Ashland said that the plant, at the Chemical Industry Park of Changzhou Yangtze Riverside Economic Development Zone, will serve customers in marine, sanitary ware, transportation, wind energy and industrial markets in China and the broader Asia Pacific region.
"China is an attractive market for investment, despite some of the current economic challenges," Ted Harris, senior vice president of Ashland and president of Ashland Performance Materials.
"This new facility reflects Ashland’s commitment to maintaining the highest production standards for gelcoats products," Harris said.
Gelcoats are specialty resins that help to improve the appearance of fibre-glass products and to protect structural layered materials from corrosion.
Ashland also operates a plant for unsaturated polyester resins and epoxy vinyl ester resins at Changzhou.
