Brazil Jan-Jul caustic soda consumption drops 3.2% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 1.47m dry metric tonnes (dmt) of liquid caustic soda from January to July 2013, down by 3.2% from the 1.51m dmt consumed during the same period in 2012, the country’s association of chlor-alkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Monday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda between January and July of 2013 was 817,663 dmt, 0.8% higher than the 811,368 dmt produced during the same period in 2012, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 657,982 dmt in 2013, down by 7.8% from 713,732 dmt imported in 2012. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 615,741 dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 94% share of imports into Brazil.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2013 are paper and cellulose with 190,865 dmt, chemical/petrochemical with 120,895 dmt, aluminium with 66,744 and metallurgy with 43,326 dmt.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil is stable amid balanced supply, sources said.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil are Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Brasil.
