HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production in July was virtually flat month on month, according to data released on Tuesday by The Chlorine Institute.
US chlor-alkali production was 958,604 tons (869,646 tonnes) of chlorine and 996,727 tons of caustic soda, the trade group said. In percentage terms, production was at 83% of capacity, unchanged from June.
US production has been below 90% for all of 2013 except for March, when it was at 91% of capacity.
Earlier in the year, many market participants anticipated that chlor-alkali production in 2013 would be more robust, especially during the spring and summer months, because of an expected rebound in the US homebuilding sector.
But while homebuilding has picked up compared with previous years, it has not had a great deal of impact on demand for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is derived from chlorine.
Major US chlor-alkali producers include Axiall, Dow, Formosa Plastics USA, Shintech, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and Westlake.
