LONDON (ICIS)--European benzene exports saw a sharp drop in June compared to the same period last year, data from European statistics agency Eurostat showed on Monday.

The first half of 2013 saw European benzene prices gradually ease following a bullish 2012, amid weak macroeconomic sentiment and slower derivative markets.

Nevertheless, European benzene spot numbers were significantly higher than in Asia and the US from mid-April to June, which kept any potential exports limited during this period.

Exports out of the EU were up year on year by 175% in April at 78,349 tonnes, but saw a sharp subsequent volume drop in May at 9,007 tonnes, although this was still higher percentage increase from the same period last year.

June subsequently saw a further reduction in export volumes of around 50% from the previous month, with Europe still the highest priced global region.

Eurostat import/export data is subject to revision as more detailed information becomes available.
