MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--Vantage Specialty Chemicals's oleochemical production expansion for refined glycerine is fully commissioned with shipments of kosher-grade vegetable refined glycerine starting, company representatives confirmed on Tuesday.

Vantage announced plans in October 2012 to expand its oleochemical production capacity for refined glycerine and oleic fatty acids at its Chicago, Illinois, facility.

The refined glycerine expansion added a kosher vegetable glycerine unit into the facility, adding to the tallow USP glycerine production unit in operation since 1994.

Both facilities are registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Deborah Baldwin, Glycerine Product Manager, said. The glycerine from both facilities will be marketed under the VYCERIN brand name.

While the kosher glycerine addition, which is on line, represents a new line of production, Vantage will continue supporting its position in the US tallow refined glycerine market, Baldwin said.

The company did not release specifics on the amount of additional glycerine production capacity to be added to the Chicago facility, but confirmed a $25m (€19m) investment was approved for site improvements and expansion.

Initial construction began as scheduled in October 2012.

The oleic fatty acid expansion is expected to add 30m lb/year (14,000 tonnes/year) of additional oleic acid production capacity to the plant, with full streams available by year-end 2013.

The company did not disclose present capacity production levels on its total tallow-based oleic acid.

Vantage Specialty Chemicals is owned by The Jordan Co, a private equity group.

US refined glycerine suppliers include Procter & Gamble, Vantage Oleochemical, Emery Oleochemical, Twin Rivers Technology and Peter Cremer North America.

Major importers include Vitusa, Wilmar, Acme-Hardesty and several trading groups.
