US PS producers nominate September increases on feedstocksHOUSTON (ICIS)--At least two polystyrene (PS) producers have announced September price increases due to increases in feedstocks benzene and styrene, sources said on Tuesday.

Total Petrochemicals announced a 3 cents/lb ($66/tonne, €50/tonne) on general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) and a 1 cent/lb increase on high impact polystyrene (HIPS) effective 1 September, according to a copy of a customer letter dated 19 August that was obtained by ICIS.

Separately, Styrolution announced a 3 cents/lb increase for all grades, according to a 19 August letter obtained by ICIS.

Sources have said that the HIPS price should be lower because of declining butadiene prices. Contract butadiene prices fell on average by 30% from July to August. Butadiene is used to make HIPS.

The proposed increases are based on higher benzene and styrene costs. Benzene contracts for August rose by 10 cents/gal. However, spot prices are increasing indicating that there may be another increase for September. Benzene is a feedstock for styrene.

August PS prices are expected to settle flat, sources have said.

US PS prices for July were assessed by ICIS at 97-99 cents/lb for bulk GPPS DEL (delivered) and 107-109 cents/lb for bulk HIPS DEL.

Major US PS producers include Americas Styrenics, Styrolution and Total Petrochemicals.
