HOUSTON (ICIS)--August contract prices in the US polystyrene (PS) market were flat in August as benzene prices rose by just 2.5%, sources said on Wednesday.

Benzene contract prices for August rose by 10 cents/gal from July levels to settle at $4.17/gal.

The increase was not seen as significant enough to push for higher PS prices.

PS prices, which were slightly higher between May and June but fell in July, remain at April levels, which were the lowest level of 2013.

Following the flat settlement, market participant turned their attention to September prices. So far, two nominations for an increase have been heard.

Total Petrochemicals is seeking a 3 cent/lb ($66/tonne, €50/tonne) increase for general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) and a 1 cent/lb for high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Separately, Styrolution is seeking a 3 cent/lb increase for both grades.

Buyers said they are planning to fight the increases.

US PS prices were assessed by ICIS at 97-99 cents/lb for bulk GPPS DEL (delivered) and 107-109 cents/lb for bulk HIPS DEL.

Major PS producers in the US include Americas Styrenics, Styrolution and Total Petrochemicals.
