Compounding grade (natural) was assessed by ICIS at €2,150-2,175/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe), injection moulding (natural) at €2,240-2,280/tonne FD NWE and extrusion grade (natural) at €2,165-2,280/tonne FD NWE according to ICIS.
Some producers had initially looked to increase prices because of the €47/tonne rise in feedstock styrene, but a €250/tonne fall in butadiene offset any increases in the co-feedstocks, which also include acrylonitrile (ACN).
“We started with an increase for ABS …but [we see] stability in ABS [prices] due to the drop in BD, and the demand not so good in August,” one ABS producer said.
“We more or less achieved [a rollover in August]. In some cases we conceded €5-10/tonne down, but that was all,” a second producer said.
On the buy side, there were rollovers and reductions confirmed.
“We got €15/tonne [reduction] from [our] main producer, and not very hard to achieve [because of] feedstocks and low demand,” a buyer said.
Demand has been satisfactory for the traditionally quiet holiday period, and there is optimism amongst market participants that demand will pick up in September.
Thoughts have now turned to September and the styrene contract price negotiations, particularly on the back of firming spot styrene prices towards the end of the week.
