SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s import volumes of most petrochemical products in July rose year on year, with significant increases seen in benzene, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methanol, official data showed on Monday.

Benzene imports almost tripled to 30,885 tonnes year on year, and more than doubled month on month. Meanwhile, MMA rose by 85% to 22,449 tonnes year on year, according to China Customs data.

The main reason for the increase in the import of benzene was growing demand this year as a result of some start-ups in the downstream including phenol and caprolactam (capro) segments, one benzene market source said.

The increase of MMA imports this month is attributed to importers purchasing less products in the past two months, one MMA industry trader said without further elaborating on the reasons.

Ethylene imports climbed by 56% year on year to 148,599 tonnes in July, and an increase of 15% month on month, according to China Customs data.

China's manufacturing growth has started to stabilise, with HSBC’s flash manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) hitting a four-month high of 50.1 in August, according to the data released by HSBC on 22 August.

Imports of some petrochemicals fell year on year in July. These include purified terephthalic acid (PTA), butadiene (BD) and capro.

PTA imports decreased by 58% year on year to 146,247 tonnes in July while capro dropped by 25% year on year to 43,771 tonnes, according to China Customs data.

China imported 14,858 tonnes of BD in July, a 57% drop compared with the same period last year, the data showed.
