HOUSTON (ICIS)--US oil railcar shipments hit a record 108,605 carloads in the second quarter of 2013, a rail industry trade group said on Thursday.

Crude oil railcar loadings were up 11.8% from Q1 2013, and they more than doubled year on year from 51,474 carloads in the Q2 2012, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) said.

Based on data from the US Energy Information Administration, railroads currently transport about 11% of US crude oil production, up from virtually none a few years ago, the AAR added.
