HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production in August rose two percentage points to 85% of effective capacity, up from 83% the previous month, according to data released on Friday by The Chlorine Institute.

Chlor-alkali production was 980,347 tons (889,371 tonnes) of chlorine for August 2013, down from 997,392 tons in August 2012.

Caustic soda production was 1,026,146 tons in August, down from 1,037,590 tons in August 2012, the trade group said.

US production has been below 90% for all of 2013 except for March, when it was at 91% of capacity.

Earlier in the year, many market participants anticipated that chlor-alkali production in 2013 would be more robust, especially during the spring and summer months, because of an expected rebound in the US homebuilding sector.

But while homebuilding has picked up compared with previous years, it has not had a great deal of impact on demand for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is derived from chlorine.

Major US chlor-alkali producers include Axiall, Dow, Formosa Plastics USA, Shintech, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and Westlake.
