PHOENIX (ICIS)--Innovation continues to support steady growth in the global polyurethane (PU) market, Tony Lanchak, vice president of urethane additives with Momentive Performance Materials and conference committee chair for the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI), said on Monday.

The US is the center for PU innovation, with energy conservation driving a lot of the growth, Lanchak said on the sidelines of the Polyurethanes Technical Conference, hosted by the CPI.

The current perspective of PU industry growth in the US has changed from one that participants held a few years ago of a mature market with moderate potential for development.

Also, the focus on natural gas and its cost benefit over naphtha is swinging investment and jobs back to the US, Lanchak said.

US shale gas will give ethylene-based products such as glycols a cost advantage.

Along with industry growth and innovation, PU participants and the CPI are focusing on several issues, such as combustibility, environment, health and safety, recycling, energy and transportation, Lanchak said.

The conference runs through Wednesday.
