LONDON (ICIS)--New registrations for commercial vehicles in the EU continued to fall in August, declining 4.4% year on year, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) on Friday.
“In August, Spain (+10.3%) and the UK (+15.3%) performed better than in the same month last year but negative results in France (-5.4%), Germany (-8.5%) and Italy (-19.5%) led to a 4.4% downturn in the whole region,” the ACEA said.
In July, demand for new commercial vehicle rose slightly by 2.8%, as the month counted on average one more working day across the EU compared with July 2012. A decrease in the UK (-0.9%) and Italian (-13.3%) markets was offset by growth in France (+3.2%), Germany (+4.0%) and Spain (+25.8%).
Data also showed that from January to August, new commercial vehicle registrations fell by 5.5% in the EU, compared with the same period a year earlier.
“The UK was the only market to post growth (+6.7%) [in the January-August period], while Spain (-0.5%), France (-7.6%), Germany (-8.2%) and Italy (-18.5%) all saw their market contract,” the ACEA added.
A wide variety of chemical markets depend on demand from the automotive industry.
In the first eight months of the year, registrations for new light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes - vans - amounted to 873,590 units, down 4.8% from the same period in 2012.
“From January to August, the EU market of vans shrank by 4.8%, compared to the first eight months of 2012, mainly affected by the contraction recorded in the French (-7.4%), German (-7.6%) and Italian (-19.0%) markets. Spain (+1.7%) and the UK (+9.4%) registered more vehicles than in the same period last year,” the ACEA said.
Registrations in the EU in the January-August period for new heavy commercial vehicles of 16 tonnes or over, excluding buses and coaches, totalled 132,896 units, 8.1% down on the same period last year, as a downturn prevailed across major markets apart from the UK market.
Over the same period, registrations for new commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, excluding buses and coaches, decreased 8.6% year on year, representing a total 176,188 new units.
Registrations for new bus and coaches over 3.5 tonnes showed a 5.1% year-on-year decline to 20,281units.
