TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s domestic shipments of foamed polystyrene (PS) sheet, or polystyrene paper (PSP), rose by 19% month on month to 8,830 tonnes in August, official industry figures showed on Wednesday.

This is a 9.1% increase from the same period a year earlier, according to the Japan Polystyrene Foamed Sheet Industry Association (JASFA).

Of the total, 3,840 tonnes were for the production of rolled PSP trays, an 11% month-on-month increase, and a 3.2% year-on-year increase, based on the data.

Domestic shipments of PSP for laminated bowls stood at 3,060 tonnes, a 34% increase from the previous month, and a 21% increase from the same time a year earlier, according to the association.

PSP is primarily used for food packaging, such as food trays and bowls.
