TORONTO (ICIS)--SGL Group will permanently close down its graphite electrode facility at Lachute near Montreal in the first quarter of 2014, affecting 110 workers, the Germany-based carbon and graphite products firm said on Friday.

The closure is part a global realignment strategy and cost-savings programme announced last month. SGL will begin winding down operations at Lachute at the end of the year and complete the closure in the first quarter of 2014, it said.

SGL added that the graphite electrodes market has been suffering from sluggish global demand for almost five years.
