MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS) --US sorbitol exports for August increased by 11% from the same month a year ago, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday.
US exports increased to 4,612 tonnes from 4,455 tonnes in August 2012.
The increase was the result of lower pricing out of the US where corn prices have dropped steadily over recent months.
Month on month, exports rose by 9% to 4,612 tonnes from 4,219 tonnes in July, the ITC said.
Top destinations for US sorbitol exports were Canada and Mexico.Sorbitol, a sugar alcohol produced in the US from corn, is a sugar substitute often used in diet foods - including diet drinks, ice cream, sugar-free chewing gum, mints and cough syrups.
The sorbitol market is expected to grow by 2%-3% in 2013.
US sorbitol producers include Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Ingredion and Roquette America.
