NEW YORK (ICIS)--August US exports for ethylene glycol (EG) rose 23% year on year, while imports jumped 26% in the same time period, according to trade data made available on Monday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
Year on year exports went up from 48,441 tonnes in August 2012 to 59,377 tonnes in August 2013.
Month on month exports climbed 63%, or 23,024 tonnes, from 36,353 tonnes in July to 59,377 tonnes in August.
Year on year August imports were up from 75,700 tonnes in August 2012 to 95,400 tonnes in August 2013.
In contrast, month on month imports, fell 8%, or 8,302 tonnes, from 103,702 tonnes in July to 95,400 tonnes in August.
EG is an intermediate chemical used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and anti-freeze/coolant.
Major EG producers in the US include BASF, Dow Chemical, Eastman Chemical, Formosa Plastics, Huntsman, Indorama Ventures, LyondellBasell, and Shell Chemical.
