TOKYO (ICIS)--Mitsui Chemicals is planning to increase its polypropylene (PP) production capacities in the US and Mexico to meet rising demand for automative materials, the Japanese producer said on Friday.

In the US, the PP production capacity at its subsidiary Advanced Composites’ site in Sydney, Ohio, will be boosted by 21,000 tonnes/year to 289,000 tonnes/year, the company said in a statement.

Mitsui will also boost its PP production capacity at Advanced Composites Mexicana’s plant in San Francisco de los Romo, Mexico, by 13,000 tonnes/year to 83,000
tonnes/year, it said.

The expanded capacities are expected to come on stream in the fourth quarter of 2014, the company said.

“Although the North American automotive industry was negatively impacted by the global financial crisis, the market has returned to normalcy with forecasts of significant growth in the future,” it added.
