LONDON (ICIS)--Europe spot butyl acrylate (buty-A) prices have softened this week on improved availability, sources said on Wednesday.

The range is at €1,570-1,600/tonne ($2,122-2,162/tonne) FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe), €30-50/tonne lower than prices were last week.

Sales control on butyl-A at Germany’s BASF was lifted at the end of October. The company had implemented force majeure in June because of production problems at its Ludwigshafen facility. It ended about a week later and sales control was put in place.

Arkema lifted its force majeure on acrylic acid (AA) and butyl-A from its Carling facility in France in October, and operations are back to normal. The producer had declared force majeure earlier in October because of a mechanical failure.

Average butyl-A spot prices rose from €1,485/tonne FD NWE in May to €1,710/tonne FD NWE in July. Prices peaked at €1,750/tonne in August and have been on a downtrend since on improving availability, gradually slowing demand and softer feedstock costs.

Spot prices for other acrylate esters, namely methyl acrylate (methyl-A), ethyl acrylate (ethyl-A) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) have seen a slight dip in value since April amid largely balanced market conditions.
