CARTAGENA, Colombia (ICIS)--Latin American buyers of toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) are turning more to Asian suppliers as US TDI producers focus on supply to North American consumers, sources said on Sunday.
Latin American TDI purchasers are relying on Asian product to fulfil polyurethane (PU) production requirements after the permanent shutdown of Dow’s TDI plants in Freeport, Texas, and in Camacari, Brazil, the sources said on the sidelines of the Latin American Petrochemical Association (APLA) annual meeting.
Immediately after the closures, PU producers in Chile, Peru and Ecuador turned to Asia when availability of US product became short. Currently, Asian product supplies a significant portion of TDI imports into the region.
Additionally, sources in Colombia said PU processors in the country are also more interested in purchasing readily available and competitively priced TDI from Asia.
