Total shuts down parts of Antwerp refinery after fatal accident

LONDON (ICIS)--Total has shut down parts of facilities at its refinery in Antwerp, Belgium, following an explosion on Tuesday that killed at least one worker, the France-based energy and petrochemicals major said in a statement to Belgian media.

The explosion occurred at around 14:00 GMT time during maintenance work. The worker was employed by a subcontractor.

Total said that there was no impact or danger on the environment or neighbouring areas.

According to Belgian media, two other workers were still reported missing. Total media officials did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.

The 17m tonne/year refinery is part of Total’s petrochemicals complex in Antwerp.
