HOUSTON (ICIS)--US n-butanol (NBA) exports for September increased almost 63% year over year, according to data made available on Tuesday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
US exports of NBA jumped to 27,770 tonnes in September from 17,072 tonnes the year prior.
The increase was due to 8,709 tonnes being transported to Belgium, the largest recipient of the US-made oxo-alcohol in September. The US also increased year-on-year exports to Saudi Arabia (5,750 tonnes) and Korea (4,604 tonnes).
Month on month, US exports of NBA jumped more than 98% from 13,990 tonnes in August.
Exports of 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) rose nearly 35% year over year but fell by 17% month over month.
Exports of the oxo-alcohol in September were 11,653 tonnes, up from 8,653 tonnes in September 2012 but down from 14,048 tonnes in August of this year.
Mexico was the top destination for 2-EH in September, receiving 3,542 tonnes. Chile (1,499 tonnes) and Canada (1,430 tonnes) were second and third, respectively.
The US imports only a fraction of the volumes of the alcohols that it exports.
Top US producers of oxo-alcohols include BASF, Eastman Chemical, Oxea and Dow Chemical.
