HOUSTON (ICIS)--US September exports of maleic anhydride (MA) fell by nearly 27% year over year, according to data made available on Tuesday from the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
September MA exports were 3,980 tonnes, down from 5,417 tonnes for the same month a year ago.
Month on month, exports fell by less than 1% from 3,983 tonnes in August 2013.
Mexico was the main recipient of MA from the US, importing 1,707 tonnes.
Although September MA contracts were steady, the market was anticipating an increase in October because of higher feedstock costs.
As a result, selling interest was low, as US material remained priced at a discount against overseas product, largely because of lower US butane costs compared with overseas benzene costs.
Major US MA producers include Ashland, Flint Hills Resources, Huntsman and LANXESS.
