US September caustic soda exports plummet 90% year on year – ITC

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US September caustic soda exports plummeted almost 90% year over year, according to data made available on Tuesday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Exports fell to 1,118 tonnes from 11,085 tonnes in September 2012.

Volumes decreased across the board, with the main drop coming from the main recipient of US caustic soda – Canada – only taking 745 tonnes of product compared with 9,808 tonnes the year prior.

Month on month, exports of US caustic soda fell more than 95% from 24,201 tonnes in August.

Imports of caustic soda into the US in September fell almost 26% to 3,154 tonnes from 4,260 tonnes in the year before period.

Taiwan continued to be the top exporter into the country with 1,333 tonnes, followed by China (917 tonnes) and Germany (525 tonnes).

Month on month, imports of caustic soda into the US rose 0.5% from 3,138 tonnes in August.

Major producers of US caustic soda include Dow, Formosa, Axiall, Olin, Occidental Chemical and Shintech.
