HOUSTON (ICIS)--US acetone exports for September were down 25% from the same month last year, according to the US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Tuesday.
August acetone exports totalled 10,101 tonnes during the month, compared with 13,484 tonnes in September 2012, according to ITC data.
Although acetone exports to Mexico were about even year on year, September exports to that country dropped by 7,657 tonnes, or almost 63%, from August.
Meanwhile, imports of acetone into the US were up sharply year over year in September to 9,811 tonnes, largely because 8,701 tonnes were shipped from South Africa versus only 2,000 tonnes shipped from that country one year ago, demonstrating improved year-over-year demand.
The US imported only 2,393 tonnes in September 2012 and just 49 tonnes in August 2013.
Major US acetone producers include Axiall, Haverhill Chemical, Honeywell, INEOS Phenol and Shell Chemical.
